WRRC FINALIST IN NATIONAL AWARDS [2014] Back to Latest News

The Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre (WRRC) was selected as one of four finalists in the 2014 NZI National Sustainable Business Network Awards in the ‘Community Innovation Award’ category. This was the first time the WRRC has been involved.

The awards recognise and celebrate businesses which have committed to sustainability and are judged in four categories: renewables, mega efficiency, community and restorative.

Nominees in the ‘community innovation’ category were selected for creating products and services which build, rather than erode, communities as well as address social needs, provide employment and invest in cultural and community initiatives.

Whanganui’s Sustainable Business Network representative Duncan Sinclair entered the WRRC into the awards because of its partnerships with other organisations and the community, its commitment to the Wanganui District Council’s Waste Minimisation Plan and its goal of reducing landfill waste and providing education.

Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre Trustees Cr Jack Bullock and Graham Pearson (of Sustainable Whanganui) were delighted that the Trust made it to the finals and said the recognition was well-deserved.

“The Trust, as well as community groups dedicated to sustainability, have worked really hard to make the Centre what it is today,” Cr Bullock said.

“Obviously those who selected the four finalists in our category were impressed too!

“The Resource Recovery Centre is just one innovative and forward-thinking organisation in a district full of innovation. We are considering our future for everyone in our community and those to come.”

Mr Pearson says he was excited the first year of WRRC’s operation had seen so many new initiatives develop and that being chosen for an award category recognised this.

“We are providing provide win/win outcomes for all those involved, and the district, as we move towards a Zero Waste community.”
